the salesgirl
sprays
the still air
as I walk by
and a subtle fragrance
of jasmined sandalwood
and pineapple sage
fills the room
and I am instantly transported
back to a long ago moment
when your laughter
reverberated against
the white dipped hollow
of my neck,
like the call of the loon,
and the tumbling night
spilled like moonlight
through the arc of your fingers,
stroking the seam
of my trembling breastbone,
and the tv down the hall
flickered whitegrey shadows
against the bedroom wall,
and the clock ticked away the hours
minute by minute
until your inevitable wake up call,
calling you back
to the space and time
of your real life,
leaving me alone,
always alone,
to curl up into the indent
of your familiar scent
upon the pillow,
and I am left
like a voyeur
to my own affairs,
a widow
with only a handful
of memories
that I keep hidden
in a seashell,
because the rolling,
hoarse sound of the waves
reminds me of your gentle voice
always calling me home again
old starlight - new starbright
