before sierra, the edges of my life seem to have all blurred together, the memories feel like sticky pages in no particular order
I remember things differently.now.
4 summers ago. sierra did not exist. except in my wildest dreams. now she is a marker for everything. I watch her jumping boldly from the diving board into the deep end of the pool, she waits til I say "on your mark, get set..." and then she leaps yelling 'ARIBA!'and when she surfaces she yells ' I did it, I did it, sira DID IT!!!" and I want to remmber this always! and I remember how last summer, she would be content to stay on the pool steps, in her little pink bathing suit. pouring water in and out of little cups and the summer before that. how she would always drink the chlorinated water, everytime i held her in the pool and the adorable way she waved her chubby little hands through the water, like she was swimming
I have seen many different summers. Summers in Florida.Summers in New England. Summers in Europe, Summers in Upstate Ny, Summers in Connecticut, manhattan in the summer, and lake placid summers. fireworks, and suntan lotion and lemon ices and sand inbetween my toes, the lingering smell of charcoal barbeques and fresh cut grass, in every neighborhood at summer's dusk
but i do not remember the exact sequence of the memories.
of the boy who gave me wilted wildflowers or whole evening's spent drinking frosty mugs of summer ale at the irish pub with my friends, of always needing the latest coach bag, or jetting to las vegas on whim...
I can't remember exacly which summer. they were.
but now that I have sierra, I use her for my marker. for everything.
she is the solar plexus of my world, and I am oh so happy to spend the rest of my life orbitting like a satellite around her luminous smile.
